Beetle

Everything was going fine…

STORY:

Everything was going fine at first until the passanger window crashed into the door one day and wouldn’t go back up. When I called the dealership, they said it would take four days to repair and they wouldn’t provide a loaner vehicle in the interim.

Then the brake lights and passanger-side headlights started going out at a ridiculous rate. They had to be constantly replaced along with the battery having issues.

But the ultimate insult and injury to me was the sunroof. It began opening and shutting at random. One day when I heard activity, I reached up to see if it was still open and it shut on three of my fingers. With my other hand (driving with my knee at this point), I twisted the knob to open the sunroof which only succeeded in it clamping down tighter. I tried sliding it back manually with no results and finally had to pull over and call 911 in hopes that a fireman could shatter the gladd and get my hand free. Thankfully, before any help was dispatched, the sunroof opened on its own for a moment so I could yank my hand free before it shut again. My fingers were swollen, discolored, and numb for days (and cost $200 at a minor emergency clinic for x-rays). When I called the dealer to ask if there was a recall for this defect, the repair manager told me it was fairly common but no recall had been issued and that it would cost me $80 for a diagnostic if I wanted the problem resolved. Thanks, but no thanks.

If I had a choice between a VW and Stephen King’s Christine, I’d pick the latter. It couldn’t be any more troublesome than my Beetle.
