Had problems with this from the start… Above is the short list of the most annoying problems - the gearbox being the most expensive.
When I called garages, they laughed at me and said they knew about the VW Golf 1.6 gearbox problem and replaced these all the time!!! When speaking to VW about this, they told me there is no problem with the VW Golf 1.6 gearbox and told me not to buy a six-year old Golf!!!
So from VW themselves, Golfs don’t last more than six years!
