Story:
Having previously owned several VWs, I bought a used 2005 Passat TDI from a VW dealer. 150 miles later the check engine light came on and indicated a failed transmission torque converter. The dealer refused to repair it. I spent $1,070 on repairs. Approximately 1,000 miles later, the engine developed a noise. Back to the dealer. This time the oil pump failed, starved the engine of oil and wrecked my engine. I did some research on the internet and found myturbodiesel.com and TDI forum, both sites are filled with compliants about the transmission and the oil pump.
The saftey concern here is: What if my oil pump failed on the highway, seized my engine and left me stuck in the fast lane. A wreck waiting to happen. These cars are going to kill someone before VW is forced to fix the problem.
Having previously owned five VWs, I will NEVER EVER purchase another VW product again. This oil pump issue is such a fundamental issue. I doubt VW engineering excellence. They are living off of their earlier quality successes with earlier cars.
BTW the Passat is made in Germany, not Mexico, Brazil etc.
